Malayalam Translation Style Guide — Voice, Word Choice & Common Pitfalls (Legal, Medical, Marketing, IT)¶
TL;DR¶
- Malayalam uses postpositions (not prepositions) — English ‘migrate to X’ becomes X-ലേക്ക് മൈഗ്രേറ്റ് ചെയ്യുക.
- Avoid overly formal address forms — ദയവായി, വന്നാലും, താങ്കൾ, അങ്ങ് are too formal; use നിങ്ങൾ.
- Acronyms transliterated to Malayalam script (POTA→പോട്ട, ISRO→ഐഎസ്ആര്ഒ).
- Comma is decimal separator (5,25); en dash NOT used in ranges — use hyphen (Pages: 1-10).
- Genitive: യന്റ (singulars in അന് + ഇന്-takers) and ഉയട (other singulars + all plurals).

Register and tone for Malayalam translation¶
Modern Malayalam register should sound conversational, not literary or overly formal. Three voice principles:
- Warm and relaxed — natural conversations.
- Crisp and clear — write for scanning.
- Ready to lend a hand — anticipate needs.
Avoid overly polite/formal markers: ദയവായി (please), വന്നാലും (if you come), താങ്കൾ (you-very-formal), അങ്ങ് (sir/madam-formal).
Why this matters: Bureaucratic register damages outcomes across spheres. In marketing it kills conversion. In patient-facing medical materials it reduces comprehension. In software UI it creates friction. In consumer-facing legal documents plain language is increasingly mandated.

When generalizing, use plural noun forms (ആളുകൾ, വ്യക്തികൾ, വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ).
Don’t use gendered pronouns (അവൾ, അവളുടെ, അവൻ, അവന്റെ) in generic references. Instead: - Rewrite to second or third person (നിങ്ങൾ or അവര്) - Plural noun and pronoun (അമ്മമാര്, ജൊടികൾ, അവരുടെ) - Articles instead of pronoun (ഈ ഡോക്യുമെന്റ് not അവന്റെ ഡോക്യുമെന്റ്) - Refer to role (വായനക്കാര്, ജീവനക്കാര്, ഉപഭോക്താവ്, ക്ലയന്റ്) - Use ആൾ or വ്യക്തി
If unable to write around the problem, use plural pronoun (അവര്, അവരുടെ, അവരോട്) for single person. Don’t use അവന്/അവൾ, അവന്റെ/അവളുടെ compound forms.
Accessibility¶
People-first language is difficult in Malayalam — use neutral approach.

Don’t use words implying pity (രോഗബാധിതനായ, ദുരിതം അനുഭവിക്കുന്നയാൾ). Spell out കൂടാതെ, ഒപ്പം, കുറിച്ച് for screen readers (instead of &, +, ~).

Localized acronyms in documentation¶
On first use, format: Malayalam translation, US term, acronym. - ഡാറ്റാ ആക്സസ് ഓബ്ജക്റ്റ്സ് (Data Access Objects, DAO) - ആക്റ്റീവെക്സ് ഡാറ്റാ ഓബ്ജക്റ്റ്സ് (ActiveX Data Objects, ADO)
Don’t create new Malayalam acronyms — keep English acronym intact.
Unlocalized acronyms¶
Common standardized acronyms stay in Roman: ANSI, ISO, ISDN, DOS, DSL, CD, DVD.
Adjectives¶
Adjective qualifies a noun. Example: ഭംഗിയുള്ള പുഷ്പം (beautiful flower) — ഭംഗിയുള്ള is adjective.
Possessive adjectives: എന്റെ പേന (my pen) — എന്റെ is possessive.
Articles¶
Malayalam has NO articles. English a/an/the are dropped: an apple → ആപ്പിൾ, a pen → പേന, the door → വാതില്.

Two main types: noun-noun, noun-verb.

Conjunctions¶
Starting a sentence with a conjunction provides informal tone.

Gender¶
Use neutral language. Plural forms of nouns help (വ്യക്തി, മേധാവി, ടീച്ചര്, വിദഗ്ദ്ധര്, ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥര്, ഉപഭോക്താവ്).
Use അദ്ദേഹം, അവര് in exceptional cases (License Terms, table headers).
Genitive¶
Genitive has TWO phonologically conditioned forms: - യന്റ: singular nouns ending in അന് + certain nouns/pronouns taking ഇന് - ഉയട: other singulars + all plurals
Examples: - കുട്ടിയുടെ അച്ഛന് (child’s father) - കുട്ടിയുടെ കാല് (child’s leg)

Comma¶
Separator for consecutive items and short pauses.
Decimals and thousands¶
- Decimal separator: comma (5,25 സെ.മീ — but with paper sizes, period is kept: 5.25 cm, 5 x 7.2 inches, 11 x 8.5 in)
- Thousands separator: COMMA (1,526; $ 1,526.75)
Colon¶
What follows proves/clarifies/enumerates.
Hyphen¶
Compound parts: Drop-down → ഡ്രോപ്പ്-ഡൗണ്; e-mail → ഇ-മെയില്.
En dash¶
Used as minus sign with spaces. For NUMBER RANGES Malayalam uses HYPHEN (not en dash): Pages: 1-10.
Em dash¶
Generally NOT used in Malayalam. Follow source if required.
Ellipsis¶
Triple-dot: നീ അവിടെ പോയിരുന്നെങ്കില്…
Period¶
End of declarative sentence. Use after some abbreviations.
Quotation marks¶
Double quotes for source content quoted as-is. Single quotes when speaker identity is revealed.
- Double: “അമ്മയെന്നുള്ള രണ്ടക്ഷരമല്ലയോ സമ്മേളിച്ചീടുന്നതൊന്നാമതായ്”
- Single: ‘ഞാന് വരാ’മെന്ന് അവന് പറഞ്ഞു.
Parentheses¶
No space between parens and inner text.
Example: (അറിയിപ്പ്: ഇന്ന് സ്കൂൾ അവധിയാണ്)

Why do Malayalam translations of English prepositional phrases often sound broken?¶
Malayalam uses POSTPOSITIONS — particles that come AFTER the noun. English uses prepositions that come BEFORE. Direct preposition-first translation produces ungrammatical Malayalam. Use the postposition table: മുതല് (from), വരെ (up to), കൊണ്ട് (with), പറ്റി (about), കൂടി (also), പോലെ (like). Suffix formation is built into Malayalam noun-postposition combinations.
How are English acronyms handled in Malayalam translation?¶
