This guide adapts rules and examples from Microsoft’s 44-page Armenian Localization Style Guide (December 2017, originally written for software/UI localization). The underlying linguistic rules apply universally — to legal contracts, medical documents, marketing copy, and any Armenian translation work. Restructured and reformatted as a general Armenian translator reference by ChatsControl.

Armenian Translation Style Guide — Voice, Word Choice & Common Pitfalls (Legal, Medical, Marketing, IT)¶

TL;DR¶

• Armenian punctuation uses unique marks: full stop is two stacked dots (Unicode 0589, not 003A); emphasis mark (շեշտ, U+055B) replaces English exclamation; hyphen (ենթամնա, U+058A) divides syllables.
• Possessives are sharply restricted — translate “your” only when it refers personally to the user (your files, your settings), not when grammatical (your hand, your mouse); avoid capitalized Ձեր.
• Address users with second-person pronoun Դուք (lowercase); avoid third-person օգտվող (“user”) which sounds institutional; drop bookish Soviet-era prepositions (նպատակով → համար, վերաբերյալ → մասին).
• Active voice strongly preferred over passive; for passive, use Instrumentative/Ablative case or կողմից construction — never the *-վել ով pattern (անջատվել է վարիչով is wrong).
• Avoid old-formal vocabulary: Սակայն/Այնուամենայնիվ → Բայց; Ի հավելումն → Նաեւ; Հնարավորություն ունենալ → Կարողանալ; Տեղորոշել → Գտնել.

Register and tone for modern Armenian translation¶

Register is the level of formality, warmth, and conversational ease the target text projects. Modern Armenian readers across consumer-facing spheres expect a register that feels human rather than bookish — academic Armenian with archaic conjunctions and verbal nouns carries institutional distance.

Three principles define the modern Armenian register:

• Warm and relaxed. Natural. Less formal, more grounded in honest conversations.
• Crisp and clear. Written for scanning first, reading second. Short sentences parseable on a phone screen.
• Ready to lend a hand. Anticipates what the reader needs and offers it at the right moment.

Why this matters: Academic register damages outcomes across spheres. In marketing copy it kills conversion — Armenian consumers expect contemporary phrasing. In patient-facing medical materials it reduces comprehension and compliance. In software UI it creates friction. In consumer-facing legal documents (T&Cs, privacy notices) plain Armenian increasingly meets regulatory expectations. Sworn legal translation, court documents, academic texts retain formal register.

Audience targeting¶

Use technical terms for technical audiences; for consumers use common words. A clinical drug monograph for prescribers uses pharmacological Armenian terminology; the patient leaflet uses everyday Armenian. A software API reference uses developer jargon; the end-user help article uses plain Armenian.

Why this matters: These archaic forms appear in legal templates and government forms out of institutional habit but feel alien in modern consumer content. A privacy policy with “Այնուամենայնիվ” sounds bureaucratic; “Բայց” reads as natural. Marketing copy with “Ի հավելումն” loses warmth. Medical patient leaflets with “Տեղորոշել” reduce comprehension.

Why this matters: Voice patterns shape user trust across spheres. In medical patient communication the “we’re doing the work” framing builds confidence; in legal consumer notices plain explanation reduces complaints; in marketing copy direct address drives conversion; in software UI clarity drives task completion.

Language-specific standards¶

Abbreviations¶

Abbreviations are formed by capitalizing first letters of words, or writing the first three letters with a dot after the last. Plural form adds “-ներ” after the last letter.

You may need to abbreviate words in UI (mainly buttons or option names) due to space constraints. Don’t abbreviate arbitrarily; use only commonly accepted forms.

Don’t abbreviate օր, էջ, տե՛ս.

Why this matters: Legal translation of certified addresses, official titles, and government references uses these abbreviations consistently. Medical translation of measurement units (ժ., ր., վ.) needs strict consistency. IT translation for storage units (ԿԲ, ՄԲ, ԳԲ) follows international conventions adapted to Armenian script.

Acronyms¶

Acronyms in Armenian are formed on the same principle as English but used less commonly. Examples: ԱՀ (Անհատական համակարգիչ), ՀՏԾ (Համացանցի ծառայություններ տրամադրող).

Localized acronyms¶

In online help or documentation, spell out the words comprising an acronym or abbreviation the first time used. Include the Armenian translation, US term, and acronym:

• (+) Տվյալների մատչման առարկաներ (Data Access Objects, DAO)
• (+) ActiveX տվյալների առարկաներ (ActiveX Data Objects, ADO)

In UI there’s usually no space for all three terms. Only in wizards can the acronym easily be spelled out and localized on first mention.

Don’t replace an English acronym with a language-specific one. Leave English acronym or abbreviation intact:

Caution: Don’t include a generic term after an acronym or abbreviation if one of the letters stands for that term. Wrong examples — RPC call, HTML language, TCP/IP-Protocol, PIN Number, ՀՏԾ ծառայություններ.

Several Armenian acronyms are written with small letters: բուհ (բարձրագույն ուսումնական հաստատություն), ջէկ (ջերմային էլեկտրակայան).

Unlocalized acronyms¶

Many abbreviations and acronyms are standardized and remain untranslated. Commonly understood acronyms that should not be localized or spelled out:

When non-localized abbreviations appear in Armenian text, auxiliary words may be needed:

Why this matters: Legal translation with international standards (ISO, IEEE) keeps acronyms intact. Medical translation with diagnostic acronyms (CT, MRI, EKG) similarly. IT translation preserves protocol acronyms with auxiliary Armenian nouns for clarity.

Adjectives¶

In Armenian, adjectives are not modified grammatically. When used as nouns, they can be declined, take a definite article, or have plural forms. Some adjectives have comparative degrees formed by word building and syntax.

Possessive adjectives¶

Frequent possessives are an English feature. In Armenian, possessive adjectives are only used to express real ownership.

Why this matters: Possessive over-use is one of the most common Armenian translation defects. Legal translation of obligations (the Buyer’s obligations, your obligations) needs careful handling — Armenian translation uses case endings (Գնորդի, Ձեր) only where ownership matters. Medical translation (“take your medication”) translates to “ընդունեք դեղը” without “ձեր” when the user identity is clear.

Articles¶

In Armenian, articles are only definite, attached to the end of a word, with shades of meaning (possessive, personal, demonstrative).

Unlocalized feature names¶

Microsoft product names and non-translated feature names are used without articles in English. In Armenian, non-localizable names can take declension endings after quotation marks (if needed).

Examples: Word-ից, Excel-ի, «Internet Explorer»-ը.

Localized feature names¶

Translated special names can take declension endings after quotation marks (if needed).

Articles for English borrowed terms¶

When facing an English loan word previously used in Microsoft products, consider motivation (does the word have features for noun-class integration?), analogy (is there an equivalent Armenian term?), and frequency (which article is used most often in technical documentation?).

Few English loan words exist in Microsoft Armenian terminology:

Capitalization¶

If the first word in the English source is capitalized, the corresponding first word in Armenian should also be capitalized. If not capitalized in English, not in Armenian — unless language-specific rules require otherwise.

Usage of capital letters in Armenian is more limited than English. Sentences and proper names (Aram, Yerevan, London, Ararat) start with capitals. If a proper name has several words, the first is capitalized and others lowercase. Exception: words that are themselves proper names.

Many more nouns and verbs are capitalized in English than expected in Armenian. Don’t mimic source capitalization; use Armenian spelling conventions. Over-capitalization is awkward and leads to inconsistencies.

Why this matters: Legal translation uses heavy capitalization for defined terms (“the Buyer”, “the COMPANY”); Armenian should not mirror this — use quotation marks or context. Marketing copy with English-style title-case looks foreign. IT/software UI must standardize internal capitalization rules.

Compounds¶

Compounds should be understandable and clear. Avoid overly long or complex compounds.

Compound words are widely used in Armenian — written as one word (joining morphemes), two or more separate words, or hyphen-joined. Length is not limited. Use the form that fits the context.

Compounds with product and component names — product names are trademarked and must remain unchanged. Additions to product/component names are added with a hyphen or by periphrastic construction.

Genitive¶

In Armenian, the genitive case is formed from nominative by adding endings (-ի, -ու, -ան, -ոջ, -վա or -ց) or by internal flexion. Pronouns inflect by root change (ես → իմ, մենք → մեր, դու → քո, դուք → ձեր, նա → նրա, ով → ում).

Avoid sequential genitive cases.

Why this matters: Sequential genitives (“the door of the room of the house of the friend”) produce parsing problems in Armenian as in any language. Legal translation with multi-noun nesting (“the Buyer’s representative’s notice’s effective date”) must restructure. Medical translation (“the patient’s medication’s dosage’s adjustment”) similarly. IT translation (“the database’s table’s column’s value”) must use prepositional constructions.

Localizing colloquialism, idioms, and metaphors¶

• Don’t substitute Armenian colloquialism for source colloquialism unless it’s a perfect natural fit.
• Translate the intended meaning of the source idiom (not literally) if the meaning is essential.
• If the colloquialism can be omitted without affecting meaning, omit it.

Nouns¶

Nouns can be modified by flexion, plurality, or definition. In English, nouns are sometimes used without definite article (dialog boxes, lists), but in Armenian a definite article is typically required.

Example: Պանակ(ը), պանակի(ն), պանակով.

Inflection¶

Some Armenian nouns have internal flexion: տուն → տան, միություն → միության, հայր → հոր. In borderline cases use regular inflection: տպիչ → տպիչի (not -տպչի).

Plural formation¶

Plural forms use combinations “-եր”, “-ներ”, “-իկ”, “-ք”, “-այք”, “-ինք” — the last four are rarely used. When the noun ends in a vowel, “ներ” is added; with a consonant ending, “եր”.

Prepositions¶

Be aware of proper preposition use. Many translators omit them or change word order under English influence.

Armenian uses no prepositions — instead, case endings and connectives placed before or after the word. In several cases, the prepositions “ի” or “առ” instead of declension provide better translation, especially when the changing field follows the translated phrase.

Avoid using formal, bookish prepositions:

Why this matters: Prepositional style is a major register marker. Legal translation with bookish prepositions (նպատակով, վերաբերյալ, օգնությամբ) feels appropriately formal in contracts but bureaucratic in consumer-facing T&Cs. Marketing copy with modern prepositions (համար, մասին) reads contemporary. Medical patient instructions in modern register improve compliance.

Pronouns¶

Pronouns can be declined and pluralized like nouns. The pronoun “Ձեր” must not be written in capitals; avoid its use entirely.

Personal pronouns are a powerful way to express voice attributes. Source text moves away from indirect “user” references toward direct second-person “you”.

In Armenian, translate “your” only where directly applicable to the user or belonging personally. Don’t translate when “your” fulfils a grammatical function or when ownership is obvious. Translate in “your settings” (settings the user made) or “your files” (user’s personal files); don’t translate in “your hand” (obviously the user’s) or “connect your mouse” (“your” has no separate meaning).

Punctuation¶

Comma¶

Comma is placed after same-type sentence members if there are no conjunctions -եւ-, -ու-, -կամ-. Interposition participial phrases are separated by commas. Direct address is separated by comma. Compound sentence parts are separated by comma if there is no conjunction or relative word.

Armenian has a punctuation mark not found in other languages: the apostrophe-like mark (`). It is used in elliptical words, postpositional or antecedent participial phrases, postpositional qualifier, apposition, and short direct speech.

Colon¶

The colon in Armenian is represented by one dot. It is placed after coordinating sentence parts with causative meaning or independence, after author speech before direct speech, and in numbering or after short word forms.

Unicode lacks a special code for this; many keyboard drivers use 002E, which is wrong because it causes incorrect text-processor behavior (interpreted as sentence end). According to Armenian standard 34.001-06, it must use code 2024.

Dashes and hyphens¶

Three different dash characters are used in Armenian:

Hyphen (Armenian ենթամնա): divides words into syllables. According to Armenian Standard 34.001-06, use Unicode 058A.

Joining dash: links parts of compound words. No spaces before or after. Use Unicode 2010, not 002D as in most common keyboard drivers.

En dash: used as minus sign, usually with spaces. Space omitted only for negative numbers.

The en dash is also used in number ranges (page numbers). No spaces around en dash in this case.

Em dash (Armenian direct speech dash): emphasizes an isolated element. Don’t substitute with hyphens.

Ellipses (suspension points)¶

Don’t use three periods or Armenian middle dots. Use the ellipsis character … (ANSI 0133).

Period¶

Armenian full stop (վերջակետ) consists of two stacked dots. Unicode 0589, not 003A as in most common keyboard drivers. If the English sentence ends with an exclamation or question mark, the Armenian translation must end with the Armenian full stop.

Quotation marks¶

[«»] Unicode 00AB 00BB. Dialog box button names or other commands may be placed in quotation marks if the context isn’t clear.

Parentheses¶

In Armenian, no space between parentheses and text inside. Full stop placement depends on what they refer to: if they enclose part of the sentence, the full stop goes after the closing bracket; if they enclose a full sentence, the full stop goes inside.

Why this matters: Armenian-specific punctuation (full stop, emphasis mark, hyphen, joining dash) is the most visible authenticity signal. Legal translation with wrong full-stop code creates text-processor failures. Medical translation with Latin periods reads as untranslated. Sentence fragments help convey a conversational tone. They are short and to the point.

Symbols and non-breaking spaces¶

Non-breaking spaces and joining dashes keep separate words in one line: numerals, units of measure, verbs and auxiliary verbs.

Verbs¶

English passive voice can be rendered in Armenian using Instrumentative or Ablative case, or the կողմից preposition, each expressing different shades. Active voice is preferred in Armenian.

Why this matters: Passive-voice errors are a known Armenian translation defect. Legal translation of “was breached”, “was executed”, “was terminated” needs Armenian active reformulation where possible. Medical translation of clinical events (“was diagnosed”, “was treated”) similarly. IT translation of system actions (“was saved”, “was deleted”) benefits from active or impersonal constructions.

Localization considerations¶

Localization adapts translated text to local language, customs, and standards. Armenian Microsoft products should read as originally written in Armenian.

Applications, products, and features¶

Product and application names are often trademarked and rarely translated. Feature names occasionally trademarked too (IntelliSense™). Verify translatability before translating product or feature names.

Trademarked names and the name Microsoft Corporation should not be localized unless local laws require translation and an approved translated form is available.

Geopolitical concerns¶

Cultural adaptation includes resolution of geopolitical issues. Sensitive issues may arise in:

• Maps
• Flags
• Country/region, city and language names
• Art and graphics
• Cultural content, encyclopedia content, historical or political references

Some issues are easy to verify and resolve. Maps and other graphical country/region representations should be checked for accuracy and existing political restrictions. Country/region, city, and language names change regularly and should be checked even if previously approved.

Country names should align with the list at Armenian Wikipedia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia list (http://mfa.am/en/country-by-country/).

Why this matters: Legal translation of treaties, international agreements, and cross-border contracts must use government-approved country names. Marketing translation with maps or country lists risks brand damage if territorial sensitivities are mishandled. Medical translation of public-health materials with population data must use current country/region designations.

Error messages¶

Error messages inform the user of an error that must be corrected. They can prompt action or inform of errors requiring restart.

Use the underlying voice principles to ensure target translation is natural, empathetic, not robot-like.

Armenian style in error messages¶

Use consistent terminology and language style. Don’t just translate as in US product.

Many English error messages end with exclamation marks. These are not used in Armenian. Use the Armenian emphasis mark (շեշտ, Unicode 055B) instead, per its rules.

Error messages containing placeholders¶

When localizing error messages with placeholders, anticipate what will replace them for grammatical correctness.

If your language has agreement between adjectives and nouns, and the noun is a placeholder, knowing the exact string is important. Most sources avoid such constructions, but be mindful when localizing software.

Terminology distinction¶

Term	Usage
access key	A subtype of keyboard shortcut. A letter or number the user types to access UI controls with text labels. Assigned to top-level controls. Example: F in Alt+F. Example in UI localization: H&ome. Most access keys are used with the Alt key.
key tip	The letter or number that appears in the ribbon when Alt is pressed. In UI localization, the key tip is the last character present in the strings after the “" character. Example: Home\H.
shortcut key	A subtype of keyboard shortcut. A key the user types to perform a common action without going through the UI. Example: Ctrl+N, Ctrl+V. Most shortcut keys are used with the Ctrl key. Ctrl+letter combinations and function keys (F1-F12) are usually best.

Arrow keys¶

Arrow keys move input focus among controls within a group. Right arrow moves to next control in tab order, left arrow to previous. Home, End, Up, Down have expected behavior within a group. Users cannot navigate out of a control group using arrow keys.

Numeric keypad¶

Avoid distinguishing numeric keypad keys from other keys unless required by an application. Provide explanations if not obvious.

English pronunciation¶

Generally, English terms and product names left unlocalized should be pronounced the English way. If your language has an established pronunciation for a common term (such as “server”), use the local pronunciation. Pronunciation can be adapted to Armenian phonetics if the original sounds awkward.

FAQ¶

What’s the modern register for Armenian translation?¶

Clear, friendly, conversational — closer to everyday speech than to bookish formal Armenian. Applies to software UI, marketing copy, consumer-facing legal text, patient-facing medical materials. Formal academic Armenian with archaic conjunctions (Սակայն, Այնուամենայնիվ, Ի հավելումն) is appropriate for sworn legal documents and academic texts but feels alien in modern consumer products.

How should I handle Armenian-specific punctuation?¶

Armenian full stop (վերջակետ) is two stacked dots, Unicode 0589 — not the Latin period. Many keyboard drivers wrongly use 002E. Emphasis mark շեշտ (Unicode 055B) replaces English exclamation. Hyphen (ենթամնա, Unicode 058A) divides syllables. Joining dash (Unicode 2010, not 002D) links compound parts with no surrounding spaces. Quotation marks are «…» (Unicode 00AB 00BB).

When should I use possessive pronouns in Armenian?¶

Sparingly. Translate “your” only when it refers directly to the user or belongs to them personally — your files, your settings. Don’t translate when “your” fulfils a grammatical function or when ownership is obvious — your hand (whose else?), your mouse (just “a mouse”). Never capitalize Ձեր.

How are key names rendered in Armenian?¶

Most function and modifier keys are kept in English (Alt, Ctrl, Shift, Tab, Enter, Esc, Backspace, Delete, Home, End, Insert). Arrow keys, Spacebar, and Menu key are translated (Վար սլաք, Աջ սլաք, Բացատ, Ցանկի ստեղն). Windows key becomes “Windows ստեղն”.

How should compound words and unlocalized product names be handled?¶

Unlocalized product names take case endings after a hyphen: Word-ից (from Word), Excel-ի (Excel’s), «Internet Explorer»-ը. Localized feature names in quotes also take endings: «Հետախույզը»-ը. Microsoft Word document = Microsoft Word-ի փաստաթուղթ. Use periphrastic construction if hyphenation isn’t appropriate.

Which Armenian acronyms should not be localized?¶

Standard international acronyms — ANSI, ISO, ISDN, DOS, DSL, CD, DVD, API, HTML, TCP/IP. When used in Armenian text, add an auxiliary noun: API միջերես, NTFS նիշքերի համակարգ. Don’t repeat the meaning embedded in the acronym — RPC call, HTML language, PIN Number, ՀՏԾ ծառայություններ are all wrong.
