An agency sends you an SDLPPX package and says “Trados required.” Or you’ve been translating in Word for years and finally decide to look at CAT tools. You land on the Trados website and see a £340/year subscription, a Professional edition with no price listed, and something called Trados Go. What do you actually need - and for how much?
Here’s a full breakdown of Trados Studio pricing in 2026: editions, costs, what’s included in each, when the investment makes sense, and when a free or cheaper alternative wins.
What Changed in Trados Licensing: The End of Perpetual Licenses¶
Until 2024, Trados sold perpetual licenses - pay once, use as long as you want. Freelance was around €450-600 depending on the version, Freelance Plus around €700. Many translators are still running Studio 2021 or 2022 today.
From late 2023 to early 2024, the model changed: new perpetual licenses for new buyers are no longer available. RWS (Trados owner) moved exclusively to subscriptions. The exception: if you already own a perpetual Studio 2021 or 2022, you can upgrade to Studio 2024 perpetually at the upgrade price.
If you’re a new buyer, subscription-only. No choice.

Trados Professional (and Team/Business)¶
For agencies and companies. No public pricing - by quote only (enquire about pricing). MultiTerm 2024 Desktop is sold separately at £295.
Key differences from Freelance:

The main practical difference for freelancers: Freelance lets you open and translate agency packages, but not create and distribute packages yourself. If you’re translating solo - not a limitation at all.
The 3 target language limit per project in Freelance is similarly irrelevant for 99% of freelancers who translate a single language pair per project.
Perpetual License: Still an Option?¶
If you own Studio 2021 or 2022 on a perpetual license, you can upgrade to Studio 2024 perpetually. The upgrade price depends on your version and whether you purchased SMA (Support & Maintenance Agreement) at the time.
Here’s the trap: without SMA, the upgrade cost is significantly higher - and several translators in the official RWS Community forum said so plainly.

“The pricing for upgrading feels completely disconnected from customer loyalty. I’ve been a Trados user for over a decade and the upgrade costs make it cheaper to just switch to a competitor.”
If you’re on Studio 2019 or older - perpetual is no longer an option. Subscription only.
For new buyers, perpetual simply doesn’t exist.

The £100/year (~€115) gap between Go and Freelance is worth it if you need specific format support (InDesign, XML, FrameMaker) or work with agency packages. If you’re translating simple documents without agency SDLPPX files - Go might be enough.
Does the Subscription Pay Off for Freelancers?¶
The standard answer: CAT tools save 25-40% of time on repetitive texts through TM. If you translate technical documentation with repeated segments and your rate is £0.08-0.12/word, 500,000 words/year already shows meaningful time savings. In practice, Trados pays for itself in 2-3 months if you regularly translate technical or legal content.
There’s also a non-financial argument: agencies require Trados. By most estimates, Trados holds 60-70% market share among translation agencies. If you want to work with large agencies, not knowing Trados and not supporting SDLPPX formats makes it harder to land contracts. The subscription is just the entry fee.

Alternatives When Trados Is Too Expensive or Doesn’t Fit¶
memoQ (~€360/year subscription or €620 perpetual + €130/year SMA) - a direct competitor with a more polished interface, Windows app. Comparable price to Trados, but agencies less commonly require it specifically.
Smartcat - cloud CAT, free for freelancers (includes a built-in job marketplace). Supports major formats, integrates with DeepL and Google. Fewer formats and less flexibility than Trados, but the price point is hard to beat.
OmegaT - free open-source CAT. Basic TM and glossary, supports common formats. The UI looks dated, but it’s free and great for understanding what CAT tools actually do.

A few practical tips:
Annual Saver is always better than monthly. The gap between £38/month and the Annual Saver is £116/year with zero extra work. If you’re buying, commit to a year.
Check promo codes. RWS runs deals at new version launches and early in the year. Sign up for their newsletter or check the site before buying - codes like PLFY26 (2 months free) appear regularly.
Translation association discounts. ATA, ITI, AUSIT, and other professional associations often have partner discounts of 10-20% with Trados. Check your association’s member benefits page.
Use the 14-day trial. Always test before paying. Some translators find after 14 days that free alternatives cover their needs - others realize Trados pays for itself immediately on real projects.
Student pricing. Some universities have agreements with RWS for academic pricing. Check with your translation faculty.
