This guide adapts rules and examples from Microsoft’s 48-page Bulgarian Localization Style Guide (originally written for software/UI localization). The underlying linguistic rules apply universally — to legal contracts, medical documents, marketing copy, and any Bulgarian translation work. Restructured and reformatted as a general Bulgarian translator reference by ChatsControl.
Bulgarian Translation Style Guide — Voice, Word Choice & Common Pitfalls (Legal, Medical, Marketing, IT)¶
TL;DR¶
- Avoid archaic and formal vocabulary: Оказвам съдействие → Помагам; Последващ → Следващ; Направете справка с → Вижте; Диапозитивно шоу → Слайдшоу.
- Use masculine form as inclusive (професор, доктор, потребител) — don’t add feminine -ка suffix even though it’s widespread in vernacular.
- Address users with second-person formal Вие (lowercase in software; capitalized only in business correspondence); avoid third-person gendered pronouns (тя, той) in generic references.
- Quotation marks „…” (low-9 + reversed-9, Bulgarian style); use „…" inside other quotes; em dash – for ranges and parenthetical insertions.
- Don’t translate every English word — split sentences, omit descriptors, rewrite for fluency (Clarity anywhere → Чистота навсякъде, not Винаги ясна картина).
Register and tone¶
Clear, friendly, concise. Use language that resembles everyday conversation rather than formal technical Bulgarian.
Flexibility: Modify or rewrite translated strings so they sound natural to Bulgarian customers. Translate intent, not words. Sometimes remove unnecessary content.

Use brief phrases with simple syntax. Avoid unnecessarily complicated, formal, or wordy syntax. Use present tense. Use active voice (more direct than passive). Passive acceptable when actor unknown, focus on action, error messages, or when user is subject and might feel blamed.

Inclusive language¶
General guidelines¶
Comply with local language laws. Use plain language. Be mindful of politically disputed cities/countries. Represent diverse perspectives. Don’t generalize. Don’t use profane terms or slang appropriation.

Avoid gender bias¶
Use gender-neutral alternatives. Although feminine -ка suffix forms are widespread in vernacular, the linguistically correct approach is to use the masculine form for generic references.

For generalizations, use plural noun forms (лица, индивиди, ученици).
Don’t use gendered pronouns (тя, нея, той, него) in generic references. Instead:
- Rewrite to use second person (Вие).
- Rewrite with plural noun and pronoun.
- Use articles instead of pronoun (документът not неговият документ).
- Refer to person’s role (читател, служител, клиент).
- Use лице or човек.

Quotation marks¶
Bulgarian uses low-9/high-9 style: „…” (German-style). For nested quotes use „…” inside «…».
Em dash¶
Em dash (—) used for parenthetical insertions and dialogue.
Comma¶
Comma usage follows Bulgarian grammar — comma before че, защото, ако, когато.
Verbs¶
Use present tense as default. Use active voice. Imperative for user actions.
Articles¶
Bulgarian uses definite article suffixes (-ът, -та, -то, -те). No indefinite article — use един/една/едно for emphasis when needed.
Capitalization¶
Use sparingly. First word of sentence, proper nouns, institutional names (first word). Don’t mirror English title-case capitalization.

FAQ¶
How is gender handled in Bulgarian translation?¶
Use the masculine form as inclusive for generic references (професор, доктор, потребител) — although the feminine suffix -ка (професорка, докторка) is widespread in vernacular, it’s linguistically correct to use the masculine form for generics. For generalizations use plurals (лица, индивиди, ученици). For pronouns, rewrite to second-person Вие, use plural forms, use articles instead of pronouns (документът not неговият документ), or refer to a role (читател, служител, клиент).
What’s the right register for Bulgarian translation?¶
Clear, friendly, conversational — like everyday speech, not formal technical Bulgarian. How do I handle the “flexibility” principle?¶
Translate intent, not words. Word-for-word produces stiff, unnatural Bulgarian. Examples: “Clarity anywhere” → Чистота навсякъде (not Винаги ясна картина); “Movie-d memories” → Спомени в размер на филми (not Вашите спомени на кинолента); “Visualize it” → Чиста и ясна картина (not Визуализирайте го). Split sentences, omit redundant descriptors, rewrite as if composing originally.
