£22,000 a year in tuition, £524 for the visa, and another £35-60 to translate each document - that’s what it costs a Ukrainian student to study in the UK after Brexit. But if you’re in the UK under Ukraine Scheme, your tuition could drop to a third of that. Here’s what you need to know about translating documents, meeting UKVI requirements, and keeping costs down.
What Brexit Changed for Ukrainian Students¶
Before Brexit, EU students paid home fees - the same £9,250 a year as British students. For Ukrainians, this didn’t change much - we were already international students paying full price. But here’s what actually shifted:
All international students now need a Student visa (formerly Tier 4) for courses longer than 6 months. Applications go through GOV.UK, and every document not in English or Welsh must come with a certified translation - this isn’t optional, it’s a UKVI requirement.
There’s one big exception: if you’re in the UK under Ukraine Scheme (Homes for Ukraine, Family Scheme, or Extension Scheme), you may qualify for home fee status. That means £9,250 instead of £22,000+ per year, plus access to student loans. It doesn’t work for everyone - you need to meet residency criteria. But it’s absolutely worth checking.
Student Visa: Step by Step¶
CAS - Your Starting Point¶
CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is an electronic document your university generates and sends to the UKVI system. You can’t apply for a visa without it. A CAS is valid for 6 months and can only be used once.
To get your CAS, you’ll need to accept an unconditional offer, pay a deposit (typically £1,000-5,000), and provide translated education documents.
Financial Requirements¶
UKVI needs proof you can cover first-year tuition and living costs. The numbers:
- London: £1,334/month x 9 months = £12,006 plus tuition fees
- Outside London: £1,023/month x 9 months = £9,207 plus tuition fees
The money must sit in your account for at least 28 consecutive days before you apply. If your bank statement isn’t in English, it needs translating too.
Full Document Checklist¶
- Valid passport
- CAS from your university
- IELTS for UKVI results (minimum 5.5 for the visa, but most universities want 6.0-7.0)
- Financial evidence (bank statement)
- TB test certificate - Ukraine is on the list of countries where this is mandatory
- Translated education documents (school certificate, degree, transcript)
- ATAS certificate - if your course involves sensitive technologies
Standard processing time is 3 weeks (15 working days). The visa costs £524 plus Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) at the student rate.
Which Documents Need Translation¶
UKVI’s rule is straightforward: anything not in English or Welsh needs a certified translation. Here’s what Ukrainian students typically need to translate.
| Document | Translation needed? | Type |
|---|---|---|
| School leaving certificate (Attestat) | Yes | Certified translation |
| Bachelor’s / Master’s degree | Yes | Certified translation |
| Transcript of records | Yes | Certified translation |
| Bank statement | Yes, if not in English | Certified translation |
| Reference from educational institution | Yes | Certified translation |
| Recommendation letter | Depends on language | Certified translation |
| IELTS / PTE certificate | No - issued in English | - |
| TB test certificate | No - issued in English | - |
What UKVI Expects from a Translation¶
Certified translation in the UK isn’t the same as a notarized translation or a sworn translation like in Germany. It’s simpler - no notary needed, no apostille. But there are clear rules:
- Full translation of the entire document - no summaries or shortcuts
- Certificate of accuracy - a statement confirming the translation is accurate
- Date of translation
- Translator’s full name, signature, and contact details
- Proof of qualifications (ITI membership, DPSI, or equivalent)
You can’t translate your own documents - even if you’re a professional translator. UKVI requires an independent third party.
One thing many people miss: Visa Application Centres now recommend combining the original and translation into a single PDF. If you upload them separately, there’s a real risk the officer won’t see the translation and will request it again.
UK ENIC and Recognizing Your Ukrainian Degree¶
UK ENIC (formerly NARIC) is the official body that compares international qualifications to UK standards. Their Statement of Comparability shows which UK level your Ukrainian degree or school certificate matches.
It’s not required for a Student visa, but some universities ask for it - especially for postgraduate courses. And it’ll definitely help when you’re looking for work after graduating.
Cost: £49.50 + VAT = £59.40 plus delivery (e-Statement is £7.50). Here’s the good part: UK ENIC accepts documents in Ukrainian without translation - they offer a translation waiver for an additional £40 + VAT. So you can submit your degree as-is, and UK ENIC will handle the evaluation.
Processing time: 15 working days.
What Does It All Cost¶
| Expense | Approximate cost |
|---|---|
| Student visa (application) | £524 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge per year | ~£776 (student rate) |
| Tuition (international student) | £11,400-38,000/year |
| Tuition (Ukraine Scheme, home fees) | ~£9,250/year |
| IELTS for UKVI | £185-215 |
| TB test certificate | £65-100 |
| Certified translation per document | £35-60 |
| Transcript translation (5-10 pages) | £60-120 |
| UK ENIC Statement of Comparability | £59.40 (+ £48 for translation waiver) |
For comparison of translation requirements across countries: a sworn translation in Germany costs €30-60, a certified translation for USCIS in the US runs $25-40. UK prices fall somewhere in the middle, but you save on not needing a notary or apostille.

Graduate Route: What Comes After Your Degree¶
One of the biggest perks of studying in the UK is the Graduate Route visa. After graduating, you can stay and work for 2 years (3 for PhD) without employer sponsorship, in any field, at any level.
Cost: £880 application fee plus IHS. You can only apply once - no extensions.
After the Graduate Route, most people move to a Skilled Worker visa, which leads to ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain - permanent residence) after 5 years. So studying in the UK isn’t just about the degree. It’s a potential long-term path to settled status.
Common Mistakes¶
Submitting without certified translation. UKVI rejects applications where documents aren’t translated or the translation doesn’t meet standards. One request from the Home Office means at least 2-3 weeks of delay.
Translating your own documents. Even a flawless translation done by you won’t pass. UKVI requires an independent third party.
Forgetting about the TB test. Ukraine is on the list of countries where a tuberculosis test is mandatory. You take it at a Home Office-approved clinic, and the certificate is valid for 6 months only.
Not checking your home fee status. If you’re in the UK under Ukraine Scheme, check whether you qualify for home fees. The difference between £9,250 and £22,000+ per year is hard to ignore.
Uploading documents as separate files. Combine your original and translation into one PDF. If the visa officer misses the translation, they won’t go looking for it - they’ll just request it again. And if your original documents were lost due to the war - here’s how to restore them.
FAQ¶
Can you get into a UK university without IELTS?¶
Some universities accept alternatives: PTE Academic, TOEFL, Cambridge English, Duolingo English Test. But for the Student visa itself, UKVI only recognizes Secure English Language Tests (SELT) - that’s IELTS for UKVI and Trinity ISE. If the university doesn’t require a SELT, they might check your English through their own internal test. The minimum score for the visa is 5.5 (CEFR B2), but most universities want 6.0-6.5 for undergraduate and 6.5-7.0 for postgraduate programs.
Will the UK accept a translation done in Ukraine?¶
Yes, if it meets UKVI requirements: full text, certificate of accuracy, translator’s name and contact details, date, and proof of qualifications. In practice, translations from Ukrainian notary offices often don’t include a certificate of accuracy in the format UKVI expects. It’s safer to order from a translator who knows British standards.
What’s the minimum amount needed in your bank account for a Student visa?¶
Tuition fees for the first year plus living costs: £12,006 for London or £9,207 outside London. The money must be in your account for at least 28 consecutive days before applying. Your bank statement can’t be older than 31 days at the time of application.
Do you need an apostille for studying in the UK?¶
No. Unlike some EU countries, the UK doesn’t require an apostille for student visas or university admissions. A certified translation without notarization is enough. This makes the process simpler and cheaper compared to Germany or Austria.
What’s the Graduate Route and does it lead to permanent residence?¶
The Graduate Route is a post-study visa for 2 years (3 for PhD) that lets you work in the UK without employer sponsorship. It doesn’t lead to ILR on its own. But after it, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa, which gives you the right to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (permanent residence) after 5 years.
