A PDF page beside what InDesign made of our file
Each pair is a page of a public document and the same page exported by InDesign 2026 from the IDML we made: copies of PDFs, a translated scan and a copied photo. Nothing was fixed by hand. Download the IDML, open it in your own InDesign and check for yourself.
We say what differs on each one, because something always does: a converted file is where a designer starts, not a copy ready for print. An IDML carries no fonts, so these pictures come from a machine with the fonts each file names, unless the case says otherwise. Each case lists those fonts and where they come from, as the app does when you download.
A diabetes booklet in Gujarati
Gujarati, an Indian script, page 5
What to look at
Live text in Noto Sans Gujarati, the face the PDF prints in, with its conjuncts formed and its bold words still bold. Headings and bullets keep their gold. The yellow box is paragraph shading, not a separate frame, and the photo sits inline in a story threaded through the pages, so text and picture move together.
What differs
The file takes its text from the PDF's text layer, which holds some conjuncts damaged, so read them against the print. The link's face and the box's width differ from the PDF, so the box's lines break at other words. The file holds the first 8 of the booklet's 20 pages.

A census form guide in Tigrinya
Tigrinya, Ethiopic script, page 6
What to look at
Ethiopic live text in Noto Sans Ethiopic, the family the PDF uses, beside the English form, which stays a picture as it is in the PDF. Look at the hanging indents of the lists, the ticked box inside a sentence and the English names running inside Ethiopic lines.
What differs
The pale panel behind the form is not carried over. Verdana and a Bold heading stand in for the PDF's Gotham and Black. The lists are a little tighter, so the column ends higher.

A Social Security booklet in Ukrainian
Ukrainian, Cyrillic script, page 3
What to look at
Two columns in one frame, threaded from page to page, so added text runs on as it would in a layout made by hand. Regular, bold and italic runs stay in the PDF's faces, DejaVu Sans and Georgia, and most lines end on the same word as in the PDF.
What differs
Hyphens at line ends are worth a look, as in студента-неіммігранта and SSA-5. At the foot the blue rules and the running foot sit a little differently, the lists are a little tighter and the blue is a little paler.

Taxpayer rights in Simplified Chinese
Simplified Chinese with English terms, page 2
What to look at
Three columns as three linked frames under the blue band, in one story that starts on the page before. Chinese is in Noto Sans CJK, the English titles inside it in Arial.
What differs
Noto Sans CJK and Arial stand in for the PDF's Chinese FZ faces and Helvetica Neue, and headings come out lighter. Spacing is a little tighter, so the third column holds less. Punctuation at a line start and the space above headings are worth a look.

A government report in Urdu
Urdu, right to left, page 3
What to look at
Right-to-left paragraphs in the World-Ready composer, in reading order, in Times New Roman at the size the PDF prints, 14 points. Each numbered paragraph stays whole, and the numbers stand in their places inside the Urdu lines.
What differs
Paragraphs run the full width of the text, where the PDF hangs them past their numbers, so lines break at other words and the page ends a little higher. The heading's underline is not carried over. Some spaces beside numbers close up, so read those lines against the print. The file holds the first 8 of the report's 35 pages.

A health insurance glossary in Tagalog
Tagalog, Latin script, page 4
What to look at
A glossary in two linked frames, threaded through the file. The pale blue behind every other term is paragraph shading, so it follows the text when the text moves, and the cross-referenced terms keep their blue.
What differs
This PDF prints in Centaur and the file names Times New Roman as its stand-in, so lines break at other words: swap it under Type > Find Font if you own Centaur. Headings look lighter, hyphens at line ends are worth a look, and the rules between the columns and over the foot are not carried over.

A translated document: a 1913 university diploma
A scan in Russian, translated into English, page 1
What to look at
A scan in pre-reform Russian spelling, translated by machine and exported with no edits. The text is live in one frame, with the italic grades and the bold First-Class where the print has them. The signatures, the margin number and the faint seal are pictures cut from the scan, and the signature block is a table.
What differs
The 1913 type becomes Times New Roman, and the text ends higher on the page. One word names a font you would install or replace under Type > Find Font. The handwritten date is faint on the scan, so a person should check it, and the translation too: it is machine output with no edits.

A scan: a certificate photographed in a plastic sleeve
A photo in Belarusian, copied without translation, page 1
What to look at
A photo with glare, among other papers on a wall, becomes an upright page. All the text is live, in Arial and Times New Roman, in one frame. The ornaments, the festival emblem and the seal are pictures cut from the photo.
What differs
The line curving over the emblem is set straight at the top, and Times New Roman Bold stands in for the title's decorative face. The cut pictures keep what the photo gave them, glare and speckles included.
