A German spouse-reunification document package has no single fixed price: the total depends on which documents you need, which ones require an apostille, and how each translation must be certified. For a useful estimate, separate translation, notarization, apostille and government fees instead of asking for one unexplained package total.
The example below focuses on Ukrainian documents for a spouse joining a partner in Germany. It isn’t a universal price list: another country, a child application or a different sponsor status can change both the checklist and the costs. The German Embassy’s spouse-reunification checklist carries a February 2022 date, so treat it as a published reference and check the latest instructions before applying.
How to estimate your package¶
A document-preparation quote is the sum of separate services, not a single government tariff. Translation providers set their own prices, while the Embassy specifies the required form of documents but doesn’t set a Ukrainian translation bureau’s rates.
Start with the official checklist for your destination and application category. Germany’s legal basis for family reunification depends on the status of the person already living there. Sections 27, 29 and 30 of the Residence Act cover family reunification, reunification with foreign nationals and spouse reunification respectively. The sponsor’s status can affect the requirements, so a checklist for one route isn’t automatically right for another.
For the German spouse route, the Embassy’s checklist marked February 2022 lists the marriage certificate among the application documents. It calls for the original and a copy, a notarized translation, and two copies of the document and translation. The same checklist says Ukrainian civil-status, court and notarial documents need an apostille, and that the apostille must also be translated. Check the current Embassy checklist, because its stated version is dated February 2022.
Use this worksheet to build an estimate:
| Cost line | What to ask the provider or authority | Count it as |
|---|---|---|
| Translation | Price per document, page or character; confirm the language pair | Translation service |
| Notarial certification | Whether the price covers notarizing the translator’s signature | Certification service |
| Apostille | Whether the document needs one and which authority handles it | Separate document-preparation cost |
| Apostille translation | Whether the apostille text is translated along with the document | Translation service |
| Copies | Number and format required by the current checklist | Copying or printing |
| Delivery or urgency | Whether either is needed and priced separately | Optional service cost |
| National visa fee | Current charge from the responsible German mission | Government fee, not translation |
A marriage certificate quote can therefore differ from a package quote. A provider might price the certificate translation and notarization together, while another might list them separately. If the certificate has an apostille, ask whether its text is included in the translation quote or billed as an additional item.
A practical estimate should also account for supporting documents. The Embassy’s February 2022 checklist includes documents from the partner in Germany, such as a statement of intent to live together, a passport or residence-permit copy, proof of residence and language evidence, with possible exceptions. A translation budget based on the marriage certificate alone can miss other documents that aren’t in German or English.
For related planning, see our guides to translating documents for family reunification in Germany and notarized translation.
What the available prices cover¶
The most useful way to compare prices is to compare like with like. A translation-only rate isn’t the same as a price that includes notarization, and neither one automatically includes the apostille itself.
ChatsControl’s certified-translation service lists translation at UAH 300-750 per 1,800 characters, depending on language; notarial certification at UAH 400 per document; and an apostille at UAH 2,100 per document. These are the service’s listed prices on 4 November 2026, not a guaranteed quote for every file or a government tariff. Ask for an itemized price for your documents through certified translation.
| Cost item | Published ChatsControl price on 4 November 2026 | What the line means |
|---|---|---|
| Translation | UAH 300-750 per 1,800 characters, depending on language | Translation service |
| Notarial certification | UAH 400 per document | Notarial certification |
| Apostille | UAH 2,100 per document | Apostille service |
| Visa application | Not included in these service prices | Separate government charge |
The Embassy’s national-visa page showed a fee of EUR 75, with half the standard rate, EUR 37.50, for minors, when researched for this article on 4 November 2026. The fee is separate from translation and document-preparation costs, and the amount should be checked with the responsible German mission before payment (Embassy national visa information).
A total based on the listed service prices still needs a document count and text volume. Translation is priced by character range, while certification and apostille are listed per document. A long document, a short certificate and an apostilled certificate don’t produce the same set of charges.
A useful written quote should say:
- Which documents are included.
- Which language each document will be translated into.
- Whether notarial certification covers the translator’s signature.
- Whether apostille handling is included or separate.
- Whether the apostille text will be translated.
- Whether copies, delivery or urgent handling add a charge.
The available market examples in the research dossier come from undated commercial price lists, so they aren’t reliable enough to present as a current market range. Ask for current quotes rather than treating an old or undated public price as a standard.
Which documents and services can affect the total?¶
The document list depends on the visa category and the family member applying. A spouse’s package isn’t automatically the right checklist for a child, and a checklist for someone joining a German citizen may differ from one for someone joining a foreign national with a residence permit.
For a spouse joining a partner in Germany, the Embassy’s checklist marked February 2022 includes the marriage certificate and partner documents. It also mentions a short additional questionnaire for the spouse applying, a statement from the partner in Germany about intending to live together, a copy of the partner’s passport or residence permit, proof of residence and language evidence, subject to possible exceptions. The checklist’s date matters: confirm the current version with the Embassy’s spouse-reunification instructions.
A child’s application needs its own checklist and its own quote. The available sources don’t provide a complete child-document list or a package price for that route. Don’t assume the spouse checklist or its costs apply to a child; ask the relevant mission which documents and certifications the child’s category requires, then get a separate itemized estimate.
Apostille rules need careful reading. An apostille is a certificate attached to a public document to confirm its origin for use abroad. The Embassy’s general reference says Ukrainian official documents generally need an apostille for Germany, but names exceptions including employment record books, diplomas or school certificates, and passports. The specific visa-category checklist takes priority, so don’t infer that every item in a family application needs an apostille (Embassy reference guide).
The practical sequence matters for pricing: first confirm whether the original document needs an apostille, then ask whether the translation quote includes translating the apostille text. The Embassy’s spouse checklist says an apostille should also be translated. A quote that covers only the certificate text may not cover that extra work.
For documents with names, dates or older spellings, compare the source documents before ordering translations. The name on a marriage certificate, passport and partner’s records needs to be handled consistently. If a document is damaged, handwritten or difficult to read, tell the provider before accepting a quote; a scan may not show every detail clearly.
The Embassy states: “In der Ukraine gibt es keine vereidigten Übersetzer. Für Antragsverfahren bei der Botschaft genügt die Übersetzung durch einen ukrainischen Übersetzer mit notarieller Beglaubigung der Unterschrift des Übersetzers.” In English: Ukraine has no sworn translators, and a Ukrainian translator’s translation with notarization of the translator’s signature is sufficient for applications at the Embassy. Read the Embassy’s instructions.
That instruction explains what form of translation the Embassy accepts for applications in Ukraine. It doesn’t mean that notarization is included in every translation price, so ask the provider to show it as a separate line if needed.
ChatsControl can translate a DOCX or PDF while retaining document layout, including tables and headings. A scanned PDF or photo follows a different path: the tool reads the page first and builds a formatted Word version before translation. The scan’s quality matters because handwriting and heavily degraded images can be read unreliably; official certification remains a human service, not an automatic part of document translation. See ChatsControl if you need to inspect a document translation workflow, but confirm the certification requirement separately.
How long does document preparation take?¶
Document preparation and visa processing are separate stages. A translation provider can quote for its own work, but that quote can’t predict when an appointment will be available or when the Embassy and the German authority will decide the application.
The German Embassy says a national visa decision may require approval from the local foreigners authority. Its guidance says that approval can take up to three months or longer; this is a visa-processing stage, not a translation turnaround time. Check the current national visa information for the route and mission handling your application.
The Embassy says: “The Embassy only issues national visas once it has obtained the approval of the foreigners authority.” See the Embassy’s national-visa page.
The distinction helps you plan the right deadline. Ask a translation provider for its delivery estimate after it has seen the documents, and ask the mission about appointment and processing information separately. Don’t treat an online story about another applicant’s wait as a forecast for your own case.
The order of work can also affect how many services you pay for. If a document needs an apostille, confirm the requirement before ordering the final translation, because the apostille may need translation too. If you translate first and later add an apostille, you may need a further translation step.
Will the Embassy accept the translation, and where can you get it?¶
The Embassy’s published instructions for applications in Ukraine say a Ukrainian translator’s translation with notarization of the translator’s signature is sufficient. The spouse checklist marked February 2022 also specifies the marriage-certificate translation and copies. Since that checklist is dated, check the current category-specific instructions before submitting your documents (Embassy spouse-reunification checklist).
The Embassy’s general reference says: “Urkunden und amtliche Bescheinigungen müssen grundsätzlich mit einer Apostille versehen werden. Ausgenommen hiervon sind lediglich Arbeitsbücher, Diplome oder Schulzeugnisse und Reisepässe.” In English: official documents generally need an apostille, with exceptions stated for employment record books, diplomas or school certificates, and passports. Read the Embassy reference.
The general reference and the category-specific checklist work together. The reference gives a broad rule and exceptions; the checklist tells applicants what to prepare for a particular application. When the two seem unclear for a document in your file, ask the responsible mission rather than paying for an apostille based on a general assumption.
You can arrange the work through an offline translation bureau, an individual translator or an online service. Compare the same scope in each quote: translation language, notarization, apostille handling, apostille translation, copies and delivery. An online translation workflow can be convenient for a readable PDF or scan, but it doesn’t replace a human certification step when the authority requires one.
A certified-translation service can coordinate translation and document formalities, while a translation-only service may leave you to arrange notarization or apostille handling separately. Neither option changes the Embassy’s requirements. Check exactly what the quoted price includes and keep a copy of the itemized quote with your application-planning notes.

How to request an itemized quote¶
Send the provider clear scans or photos of every document you want priced, and identify the destination country and application category. A quote for “family documents” is hard to compare if one provider assumes translation only and another includes notarization and apostille handling.
Use this sequence:
- Confirm the route. Identify the destination, relationship and sponsor’s status. Open the official checklist for that category.
- Make a document inventory. List the applicant’s documents, the sponsor’s documents and any child-specific documents.
- Mark each requirement. Note the translation language, notarization requirement, apostille requirement and copy count stated in the checklist.
- Request line-by-line prices. Ask the provider to separate translation, notarization, apostille, apostille translation, copies and delivery.
- Add government charges separately. Keep the visa fee and any language-test costs outside the translation quote.
- Check the final set. Compare the prepared documents with the current checklist before submission.
A typical online translation flow is to upload a document, review the translated file and arrange any required human certification separately. ChatsControl preserves layout when translating supported DOCX and PDF files, and it can read scans and photos before creating a formatted Word translation. A scan that is unclear or handwritten may need human attention; the tool’s translation output isn’t itself a notarized document. The service lists a free allowance of 6,000 characters at sign-up and pay-as-you-go pricing of USD 1.50 per 1,000 characters, or USD 2.70 per 1,800-character page, on 4 November 2026 (ChatsControl). Scans use the same character rate, with a minimum charge of 1,000 characters per page.
A provider quote should make clear whether the price covers a translation draft or an official certified result. ChatsControl’s certified-translation service adds a human translator and notarization where needed; its listed prices on 4 November 2026 are UAH 300-750 per 1,800 characters for translation, UAH 400 per document for notarization and UAH 2,100 per document for an apostille (certified translation). Ask for confirmation that the exact document and destination are covered before relying on any listed rate.
FAQ¶
How much does it cost to translate and notarize a marriage certificate for family reunification in Germany?¶
The price depends on the translation’s length and the provider’s rates. ChatsControl lists translation at UAH 300-750 per 1,800 characters and notarial certification at UAH 400 per document on 4 November 2026; ask whether translation of an apostille is a separate charge (certified-translation service).
Does the German Embassy require an apostille on a Ukrainian marriage certificate?¶
The Embassy’s spouse-reunification checklist marked February 2022 says Ukrainian civil-status documents must have an apostille and that the apostille must also be translated. Check the current checklist before applying because the published version is dated (Embassy checklist).
How much does it cost to prepare documents for family reunification with a child?¶
The available price information doesn’t establish a single child-package total. Get the current child-specific checklist, count the required documents, and ask for separate prices for translation, notarization, apostille and apostille translation.
Is the German visa fee included in document preparation?¶
No. The national-visa fee is a government charge, separate from translation, notarization and apostille services. The Embassy page showed EUR 75 for a national visa and EUR 37.50 for a minor when researched on 4 November 2026; check the current amount before payment (Embassy national visa information).
Will the Embassy accept a Ukrainian translator’s notarized translation?¶
The Embassy says a Ukrainian translator’s translation with notarization of the translator’s signature is sufficient for applications in Ukraine. Follow the current checklist for your visa category and confirm any document-specific requirement with the responsible mission (Embassy spouse-reunification instructions).
Can I order a translation online if my documents are scans?¶
Yes, an online tool can process supported scans and photos, but a scan is an image that must be read before its text can be translated. Handwriting and heavily degraded scans may be read unreliably, and a translated file still needs a separate human certification step if the authority requires one.
How long does it take to prepare the documents?¶
A provider needs to review your files before giving a reliable delivery estimate. The Embassy says approval from the local foreigners authority may take up to three months or longer; that period concerns visa processing, not translation or document preparation (Embassy national visa information).
