PDF and Word to InDesign 2025

InDesign 2025 on Windows gets the full set of test files, and a Mac copy has checked how it finds Office fonts. One thing to know: some Chakma text can close it.

Versions we open the files in

The same 233 files, 1,115 pages in all, opened by script in real InDesign: documents in more than 80 languages, two long documents translated into 24 languages, and our sample scans. In each we look for errors, missing fonts, missing glyphs and text hidden in overset, and what a run turns up is what we work on next. In this set all 233 came out with the same number of pages on each version. Your own file can differ, so check it in the Preflight panel before hand-off.

If InDesign 2025 closes on your file

InDesign 2025 and 2026 may close while setting some lines of Chakma. That is a bug in InDesign, not in the file. Our font list warns you when a document has Chakma text, so it does not come as a surprise.

If InDesign closes on another document, we want to hear about it, because it is not something we have seen with any other script in our tests.

What the last run found on 2025

Build 20.3 on Windows, with 233 files and 1,115 pages.

Of the versions we run this is the closest to 2026. Comparing the words of every line, not one of 39,231 differed. By position, no line in any script stands more than a few points away. So a file can pass between 2025 and 2026 with little to read again.

Like 2024, it reports Cambria Bold and Italic as unavailable even in an empty document and prints them correctly. Export a PDF and read its fonts if you want to be sure.

Windows and Mac: same file, different fonts

The file is the same on both, but the fonts are not. This is the part that catches a team working across both, so the font list after the download says which is which.

Handing a file between Windows and a Mac

Send IDML rather than INDD if the other person may be on another version.
Check Type > Find Font on the machine that opens it: a font present on one side may be missing on the other.
Where a font is missing, install it instead of replacing it, or the lines will break differently.

Questions

Does a file made for Windows work on a Mac?

There is no separate file. If the fonts it names are on the machine, it opens the same way.

Which fonts should a mixed Windows and Mac team agree on?

The ones in the first row of the table come with both systems. Anything else, check on both sides before you start setting.
